President Donald Trump has approved Governor Kelly Armstrong’s request for a major disaster declaration covering August 7th and 8th storms that caused significant electrical infrastructure damage across 7 counties in North Dakota. The declaration covers Barnes, Grand Forks, Griggs, Kidder, Nelson, Steele, and Stutsman counties, making federal assistance available through FEMA. Armstrong says the help “will especially help our utility providers by defraying their recovery costs and helping them hold down rates” for residents. The storms brought damaging straight-line winds, large hail, and numerous tornadoes. This marks the second disaster declaration in two months, following September’s approval for 19 counties affected by June storms that spawned over twenty tornadoes, killed three people, and caused more than $11 million in public infrastructure damage.
