North Dakota ranchers are pushing back against President Trump’s proposal to import beef from Argentina, saying it’s causing market chaos during a critical selling season. Julie Ellingson of the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association told from the North Dakota Monitor that Trump’s Sunday announcement had immediate, dramatic impacts on livestock futures prices, calling them “real time, real life consequences.” Frank Tomac, president of the Independent Beef Association of North Dakota, warns “if our president continues to push this, it’s going to continue to drop our prices” during fall when summer-grazed cattle are typically sold. Ranchers say this comes after years of low prices when they’re finally seeing financial success, with the U.S. cattle herd shrinking and demand remaining strong. Representative Julie Fedorchak signed a letter to Trump requesting clarity on the policy. Ranchers are calling for country of origin labeling so consumers can choose American beef.
