State regulators and environmental advocates are squaring off over one of North Dakota’s biggest dairy proposals.
The North Dakota Monitor reports an environmental group has filed suit Monday to overturn a state permit for a 25,000 cow dairy near Hillsboro. The Dakota Resource Council says North Dakota’s Department of Environmental Quality didn’t fully review potential impacts on the Red River.
The DEQ approved the Riverview Herberg Dairy permit on September 24, saying the company met rules for manure storage and nutrient use on nearby fields.
Construction work at the site has already begun this month, according to state filings.
Canadian officials recently prompted review of the site by the International Joint Commission, raising concerns runoff could reach Canada’s Lake Winnipeg.
Riverview said in a statement that its operations comply with discharge bans and benefit local farm economies.
