Days after it was announced that the Minnesota Vikings would be placing quarterback Carson Wentz on injured reserve, the Minnesota Vikings have added a quarterback to their practice squad in preparation for their time without Wentz as the teams main backup to J.J. McCarthy.
The Vikings have added former Los Angeles Rams quarterback John Wolford to their practice squad. Wolford has jumped around to different teams’ practice squad in previous years, but last seen in starting action in 2020. Wolford was on the team at the same time that current Head Coach Kevin O’Connell was the offensive coordinator.
McCarthy will make his first start for the Vikings since week two against the Atlanta Falcons when after the game it was revealed that McCarthy was dealing with an ankle injury. Carson Wentz took over for the following weeks, going 2-3 in relief. Rookie Max Brosmer is expected to be the teams backup if anything is to happen to McCarthy in Week 9 at the Detroit Lions.
Many have speculated if the Vikings will reach out to some teams in interest to trade for a veteran signal caller that can jump in handle the offense if need be. Some names mentioned were Kirk Cousins (Of Course), Russell Wilson, Kenny Pickett, Jameis Winston, and a name Vikings fans haven’t heard in awhile, Case Keenum.
Minnesota will play its second NFC North Matchup this Sunday in Week 9, when the team travels to Detroit to take on the 5-2 Lions. Minnesota is 1-0 so far in the NFC North in 2025, which was McCarthy’s first win as a starter coming back on a Monday Night at the Chicago Bears. Can McCarthy bring some of that magic back when he returns to the starting line up? One thing to note in this game, is McCarthy will be returning to the state of Michigan, where he never lost a game during his college career. Will we see a Michigan Wolverine resurgence from McCarthy? We will find out on Sunday.
