The Department of Public Instruction is accepting comments on proposed charter school regulations ahead of a December 2nd hearing at the Capitol, according to reporting by the North Dakota Monitor. State lawmakers passed Senate Bill 2241 during the 2025 legislative session, which authorized the state to establish public charter schools.

The rules establish transparency and accountability requirements for charter schools, including mandatory public interviews for applicants, plans for special education students, and annual reporting on budgets and academics. Schools violating state law could have funding withheld. State Superintendent Kirsten Baesler says the rules provide the same oversight traditional public schools receive.

If approved, rules take effect April 1st, 2026, allowing charter school applications. Comments are due by 5 p.m. December 15th.
