North Dakota has suffered one of the largest declines in U.S. state tourism for 2025, with Canadian vehicle crossings down about 30% year-over-year at major land ports.

The state’s Commerce Department estimates this decline has cost roughly $14 million in Canadian visitor spending so far this year.

Industry insiders say the drop owes in part to tense U.S.–Canada relations, including tariffs placed by the Donald Trump administration and strong anti-U.S. sentiment among Canadian travelers.

Tourism is North Dakota’s third-largest industry.  State officials are now reviewing cross-border outreach, marketing campaigns and border-entry policies in hopes of reversing the trend.
