Gov. Kelly Armstrong directed all U.S. and North Dakota flags to be flown at half-staff, as former Vice President Dick Cheney died Monday at age 84 from pneumonia complications and cardiac and vascular disease, according to a statement from his family. Cheney served in several key roles through his career; before his eight years as vice president with President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009, he served as U.S. Secretary of Defense, as a congressman from Wyoming and as White House chief of staff under President Gerald Ford.

Armstrong extended his condolences, saying the “influential member of five presidential administrations [left] a legacy of public service, patriotism and a belief in American exceptionalism,” according to a press release.

Armstrong called for flags to be flown half-staff until the day of interment, per U.S. flag code.
