During her stop at the National FFA Convention & Expo, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins addressed key agricultural issues, including the halted cattle crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border due to the New World Screwworm outbreak and the Trump administration’s plan to increase beef imports from Argentina.
Rollins emphasized that the USDA will not reopen the border until the parasite threat is fully contained, noting that 250,000 cattle remain stalled in Mexico.
She also explained that the administration is exploring modest increases in imports from Argentina to stabilize beef prices, the amounts under discussion would remain small saying these imports would primarily supply lower-cost ground beef, helping offset shortages caused by trade restrictions and port closures.
Despite these efforts, the proposal to expand Argentine imports has drawn bipartisan criticism, with lawmakers citing concerns about animal health and trade imbalances.
