Solar Storm Predicted to Interrupt GPS, Radio Signals

By Ryan King Nov 12, 2025 | 7:12 AM

The Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a rare G4 (severe) geomagnetic storm watch following several powerful solar eruptions, including an X5.1-class solar flare on Nov. 11—the strongest flare of 2025 so far.

These solar events are expected to cause strong geomagnetic activity as coronal mass ejections reach Earth, potentially disrupting GPS, satellite communications, and high-frequency radio signals for several hours. The storm could also bring northern lights visible much farther south than normal.

Farmers and GPS-dependent industries are advised to prepare for possible signal loss or reduced accuracy, as was seen during a similar storm in May 2024 that caused major navigation outages and crop losses across the Midwest. While newer GPS systems are more resilient, older receivers could experience temporary failures.
