North Dakota Superintendent of Public Instruction Kirsten Baesler officially resigned Thursday, effective November 24th, to become assistant secretary of elementary and secondary education at the U.S. Department of Education, according to reporting by the North Dakota Monitor.

Baesler was confirmed by the Senate in October, but her start date was delayed by the federal shutdown. She has led North Dakota’s K-12 education system since 2013, emphasizing student choice readiness for college, career, or military service, and creating an innovation waiver program for schools.

Governor Kelly Armstrong appointed Levi Bachmeier, West Fargo School District business manager and former policy adviser to Governor Doug Burgum, as the next superintendent. Bachmeier will assume duties after Baesler’s departure.
