A winter storm warning is in place for parts of North Dakota this week, with impacts arriving with increased holiday travel.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch for much of the state from Tuesday night into Wednesday, warning of accumulating snow, gusty winds and reduced visibility.

Impacts are expected to begin late Tuesday morning in Jamestown and Stutsman County, and is expected to last through the night.  At least 2 inches of snow is likely, and accumulations could exceed 8 inches in some areas.  Earlier impacts will be felt in the Northwestern part of the state and in Minot before that.

Drifting snow and limited visibility will also become issues, with forecasts showing sustained winds up to 20 miles per hour with gusts exceeding 35 miles per hour through most of Tuesday.

Temperatures will drop sharply after the storm, settling into the 20s and teens on the Thanksgiving holiday.  Overnight lows will approach or dip below zero in Jamestown and more snow possible on Friday and into the weekend.

Officials at the NWS are advising residents to check travel forecasts if they’re on the road, avoid letting snow build at home and prepare for drifting snow and slick surfaces during most of Thanksgiving week.
