Two cargo ships are heading to Louisiana and one to Texas to load the first U.S. soybean and sorghum shipments to China in months, signaling a tentative restart of agricultural trade after China halted purchases during the trade war.
China has recently bought nearly 2 million metric tons of soybeans and some wheat, though Beijing has yet to confirm the White House’s claim that it agreed to buy 12 million tons by year’s end and 25 million tons annually for the next three years.
U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said shipments have already begun and that the U.S. aims to diversify export partners, so farmers aren’t overly dependent on China.
