(VIDEO BELOW) Dashcam footage captured by a fire crew near the North Dakota-Minnesota border shows what happens when motorists don’t adapt to weather conditions. Despite officials advising drivers not to travel, a pickup truck nearly struck two firefighters during Tuesday’s snowstorm.
The incident happened just after 4 p.m. near Harwood, north of Fargo, where Harwood Fire and Rescue and the North Dakota Highway Patrol were responding to multiple vehicles in the ditch on Interstate 29. The footage shows a white pickup truck suddenly sliding into view, forcing two firefighters to jump out of the way at the last second before it nearly strikes a state patrol squad car.
Due to icy roads and poor visibility from the blizzard, Interstate 29 closed for multiple hours Tuesday in both directions. Harwood Fire and Rescue Chief Brian Giere says the video “absolutely infuriates” him, noting two firefighters almost didn’t make it home and the Highway Patrol nearly lost a vehicle because of irresponsible driving.
“This is why we ask people to stay off the roads,” Giere said. “Slow down and pay attention or don’t travel.”
