Portrait of ND Supreme Court Justice Daniel Crothers
North Dakota Supreme Court Justice Daniel Crothers announced he will retire February 28th, 2026, after more than 20 years on the high court.
Governor Kelly Armstrong praised Crothers for serving with dedication, fairness, and professionalism, noting his respect for litigants and the separate roles of government branches. Crothers was appointed to the Supreme Court by Governor John Hoeven in 2005 and was elected to 10-year terms in 2012 and 2022.
The Fargo native earned his law degree from UND in 1982 and worked in private practice before joining the Nilles Law Firm as partner from 1987 to 2005. He served as State Bar Association president from 2001 to 2002 and currently chairs North Dakota’s Committee on Judiciary Standards and the American Bar Association Standing Committee on Professional Responsibility.
Under state law, a Judicial Nominating Committee must provide Governor Armstrong with a list of nominees within 60 days to fill the vacancy.
