State Officials Urging Horse Owners to Stay Vigilant on Herpesvirus Spread

By Ryan King Nov 26, 2025 | 7:20 AM

A major outbreak of equine herpesvirus (EHV-1) and its severe neurological form, equine herpes myeloencephalopathy (EHM), has spread across multiple states after originating at a major rodeo event in Waco, Texas. More than 20 horses have shown neurological symptoms, with additional horses testing positive for EHV-1 without signs of illness.

While most cases remain in Texas, infections have also appeared in South Dakota and other states. Officials say affected horses are being quarantined, and state veterinarians have contacted exposed horse owners to ensure monitoring and isolation for at least 21 days.

Veterinarians urge strict biosecurity as the outbreak threatens major upcoming events like the National Finals Rodeo. Owners are advised to avoid sharing equipment, isolate traveling horses, minimize contact with other animals, and watch for early signs of illness.
