The James River Senior Center’s building project hit a major fundraising milestone.
Executive Director Maureen Wegenke confirmed they’ve now raised $1 million, half of the a $2 million total capital campaign goal. The new campus project currently under construction in north Jamestown with a price tag totaling about $2.8 million. Wegenke said 90 individuals, families and organizations have given so far through gifts, pledges or planned gifts.
Plans include renovating the former IDK building at 1009 13th Street Northeast with two additions, updated kitchen space and a safer, more accessible layout for seniors and riders. Construction is expected to wrap up by March, when the center hopes to move out of the Legacy Center and into the new location.
The center and transit system also provides thousands of meals and rides each year across Stutsman and surrounding counties, and Wegenke said a growth of those programs is planned and include a better dedicated building and parking lot.
The James River Senior Center is accepting capital campaign contributions directly at this time.
