A passerby made a heartbreaking discovery Sunday–a young man’s body was found lying in the ditch on I-94, about eight miles west of Valley City. The North Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the fatal hit-and-run crash, according to a media release.

Dispatchers received multiple 911 calls Saturday night reporting a pedestrian walking along I-94. Law enforcement made contact with the 27-year-old man, who declined assistance. The last call to dispatch came at approximately 10:55 p.m. Saturday.

The passerby discovered the man’s body in the ditch Sunday afternoon around 2:30 p.m. The incident occurred on eastbound I-94 near mile marker 282. Investigators found vehicle pieces consistent with a hit-and-run, including a large portion of a bug deflector. The vehicle likely has damage to the front and/or passenger side.

The Highway Patrol is asking anyone who saw a vehicle with new damage in the area during late Saturday night or early Sunday morning to come forward. Contact the North Dakota Highway Patrol at 701-328-2447 or via email at ndhpsafetyedu@nd.gov. The crash remains under investigation.
