The North Dakota State Patrol is issuing a warning about the dangers of excessive speed after a driver was clocked traveling 150 miles per hour on U.S. Highway 83 Sunday afternoon.
The vehicle was stopped near mile marker 209, north of Minot, in a zone where the posted speed limit is 70 mph. Troopers said that driving at more than double the speed limit creates a lethal environment for everyone on the roadway, as stopping distance is vastly increased, and the force of impact at these speeds significantly increases the likelihood of a fatal outcome, regardless of if a seatbelt is worn.
Because the driver exceeded the limit by 80 mph, they are facing a $420 citation and 15 points on their license, which automatically suspends it for 28 days.
