A 21-year-old woman from Jamestown is in custody, facing potential assault charges, following a violent encounter with law enforcement during a welfare check Wednesday morning.
Officers were dispatched to an apartment on the 900 block of Thomas Avenue at around 11 a.m. for a welfare check on Emily Leona Sather. According to Jamestown Police Chief Scott Edinger, Sather is “well known” to the department, as officers have responded to her residence 14 times since October 2025.
When police arrived on scene, the first responding officer knocked on the apartment door. According to police reports, Sather opened the door and immediately lunged at the officer without being provoked, punching them in the face at least twice.
The officer engaged in a brief struggle before being able to deploy a taser to subdue Sather and place her in handcuffs. Sather was transported to JRMC by Jamestown Area Ambulance and was later taken to the North Dakota State Hospital. The officer was treated for cuts and bruises at JRMC and has since returned to duty.
Sather is now awaiting formal charges from the Stutsman County State’s Attorney.
