Jamestown braces for Saturday snow, winter storm watch remains south of city

The annual Runnin’ O’ the Green takes place Saturday, and participants may have to bear a bit of snow! While a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for much of southern North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota this weekend, Jamestown is currently excluded from the watch area. The National Weather Service is watching a low-pressure system in the Central Plains, as any shift in its track could bring more significant snowfall north into Stutsman County.

It is expected to be somewhat windy today, but nothing near the gusts we experienced last night. For now, Jamestown is bracing for blustery conditions and light-to-moderate accumulating snow starting Saturday afternoon, with a high of 31 degrees.

The official Winter Storm Watch for Saturday covers areas along and south of the I-94 corridor, with the main area of focus being South Dakota and southern Minnesota where moderate to heavy snow is more certain.  Even without a formal watch in Jamestown, “patchy blowing snow” is expected Saturday night into Sunday morning. This could lead to sudden drops in visibility for travelers in our area.

Saturday night carries the highest probability of impact with a 70% chance of snow in Jamestown.

Following this system, the NWS says temperatures will remain well below normal through early next week before a moderate warming trend arrives by mid-week.
