Faith leaders and community members are preparing for a march to the North Dakota Capitol this Sunday, March 29, to push for the protection of immigrants, and an end to aggressive federal enforcement actions, according to reporting by Mary Steurer of the North Dakota Monitor.
The event is entitled the “Palm Sunday Path,” and it is part of a movement that has nationwide connections. This comes as immigrant communities in North Dakota are in “despair,” including the congregation of Rev. Ben Muhorana’s small Bismarck church, mainly comprised of immigrants, who all have legal status. However, legality has been in question, as citizens and permanent legal residents have still been detained.
Organizers say the message for the event is to uphold the Christian values of “caring for the sick, feeding the hungry and welcoming the stranger,” a reference to a Bible verse. Participants hope to show support to immigrant neighbors and to hold elected leaders accountable for policies they believe violate human rights and dignity.
