Homeless Man Chooses Fargo Field Over Shelter Despite Subzero Temps

By Payton Gall Feb 14, 2025 | 9:15 PM

A homeless man who recently moved from Kansas City has been sleeping in an open field near Scheels Arena in Fargo, choosing the harsh winter conditions over shelter services. He told Valley News Live he feels safer outside, despite the extreme cold. Carissa Raaen, Homeless Outreach Coordinator for Fargo Cass Public Health, explains that while shelters are full, some individuals choose to stay outside for independence. Her team regularly checks on outdoor homeless residents, offering assistance with housing, documentation, and basic needs. The Downtown Engagement Center is currently accepting winter clothing donations on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
