Senate Bill 2228 passed the North Dakota Senate on Friday and would provide $1 million in grants to help rural grocery stores stay open. The funds are meant to improve food access for those who live in smaller communities.
If passed all the way through the legislature, the bill would allow the Department of Commerce to manage the program and set rules for awarding grants. Rural grocery stores that already exist would get priority over those looking to reopen.
The bill passed with a vote of 40-6 in the senate. It will now move to the House floor.
