Tornadoes in US on the Rise in 2025

By Ryan King May 29, 2025 | 9:06 AM

As of May 26, 2025, the U.S. has logged 1,010 tornado storm reports, making this year the third-highest tornado count through that date in the past 15 years. This is nearly 40% above the average of 727 LSRs for the same period. Only 2011 (with over 1,600 tornadoes) and 2024 (with more than 1,000) had higher counts. Four states — Mississippi, Illinois, Missouri, and Texas — have each recorded over 85 tornadoes so far, with especially heavy damage reported across the Delta and Mid-South.

In addition to the high number of tornadoes, 2025 has already seen an unusually large number of violent EF4 tornadoes — five through late May. These storms, with winds exceeding 166 mph, are among the most destructive and are known for flattening well-built structures.
