The poor air quality last weekend in North Dakota broke records.

The average AQI throughout the state stayed above 200 on Saturday, May 31.  That was the first time in the state’s history the AQI index stayed above 200 for a 24-hour period.

The average AQI on May 31 in Lostwood was measured at 284, with the Beulah location averaging 283.  Individual readings above 300 were common.

The smoke is coming from the wildfires currently raging in Canada.

The previous worst day in the state’s history was May 17, 2023.

Air quality is expected to remain in the moderate zone in North Dakota today, with Northern Minnesota blanketed in smoke making the air quality very unhealthy to dangerous.
