The Benson County Sheriff is resigning a day after a deputy in the department was charged with multiple felonies.

The County Commission announced the resignation of Sheriff Ethan Rode, and said in a statement that the resignation was not directly related to the charges against the deputy.   Rode’s resignation is effective immediately.

The deputy, Travis Carlson, was arrested Thursday and incarcerated in the Grand Forks County Correctional facility on felony charges related to an arrest without jurisdiction on tribal land, and falsifying statements to investigators.   Carlson also faces numerous additional charges.

Benson County Commissioner Dick Horner will assume the role of County Sheriff until a replacement or interim appointment is made.
