A North Dakota woman has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after a child was found dead in her basement three years ago.
37 year-old Krissy Hinsley of Hazen pleaded guilty to two counts of child neglect involving the death of 3 year-old Ariana McKay in August of 2022. Hinsley was sentenced to five years for each count.
Prosecutors said McKay had consumed acetaminophen, which is found cold and pain relief medicines, including Tylenol, on the night she was taken to the hospital and pronounced brain dead.
Prosecutors also alleged that Hinsley and the girl’s father, Austin Lester, were dating and would use drugs while leaving the child alone in a filthy room on a concrete floor, withhold food, and physically abuse her. Prosecutors allege this happened over many months, if not years.
Lester has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, child neglect, and assault and will be sentenced on August 5.
Hinsley was being held at Cass County Jail before transfer to a federal penitentiary.
