NWS Confirms Tornadic Activity in Stutsman, Grand Forks Counties – Severe Storms Forecast Friday Night

The National Weather Service in North Dakota confirmed reports of tornadic activity in Stutsman and Grand Forks counties overnight.

North Dakota was hit with severe thunderstorms late Thursday night into Friday morning.   Severe winds and strong rain pushed eastwards through the area as a line of storms formed with reported supercell activity in central and eastern North Dakota.

Stutsman County emergency dispatch confirmed tornadic activity and issued a warning for the northcentral part of the county at around 2:45 a.m. on Friday.   The National Weather Service in Grand Forks then issued a tornado warning for eastern Grand Forks County around 4:00 a.m. after confirming tornadic activity there.

Severe winds caused reported damage throughout the state, with confirmations of downed trees, damaged roofs, and scattered debris across Jamestown.

The NWS says some of the highest recorded wind speeds were 91 mph in Grand Forks, 74 mph in Valley City and Casselton.

There are more severe storms forecast for Friday night into Saturday morning, with a Level 2 threat advisory issued for southeastern North Dakota.

Residents in North Dakota, western Minnesota, and northwestern South Dakota should remain weather aware and be ready to shelter if a warning is issued during these storms tonight.  Having multiple ways to receive emergency alerts is advised.
