Are political tensions repelling Canadian tourists? As first reported by from the North Dakota Monitor, border crossings from Canada to North Dakota are down 30% in the first half of 2025, resulting in an estimated $14.4 million loss in visitor spending compared to last year. The North Dakota Department of Commerce says the decline appears linked to current U.S.-Canada political tensions and tariff policies. A recent survey found 63% of Canadians say politics have made them less likely to visit the U.S.

This isn’t stopping Canadian tourists from traveling to Europe, as tourism officials report that travel there remains steady. However, their visits to attractions like Theodore Roosevelt National Park and local hotels have decreased significantly. Despite this, industry leaders are holding onto hope that cross-border friendships will endure beyond political differences.
