Republicans in Grand Forks have chosen a University of North Dakota faculty member to fill a vacant state House seat in District 42.

Dustin McNally, assistant dean in UND’s College of Engineering and Mines, was picked over the weekend. He replaces Emily O’Brien, who resigned recently after being named deputy commissioner of the state Department of Health and Human Services.

O’Brien had represented the district since 2017. State law gave Republicans in District 42 21 days to name a replacement.

McNally won after several rounds of voting and plans to run in 2026 to complete the term, which runs through 2028.
