The North Dakota Agricultural Weather Network has completed a $6.4 million project to expand weather monitoring across the Upper Missouri River Basin. NDAWN added or retrofitted eighty-five weather stations throughout central and western North Dakota using U.S. Army Corps of Engineers funding, according to reporting by Scout Nelson from ND Ag Connection. Director Daryl Ritchison says the improvements make the region “one of the most robustly monitored for weather data in the world.” The stations provide real-time data on rainfall, soil moisture, and snow water content to help predict flooding and drought. Farmers benefit from agricultural models that predict crop growth and pest development. North Dakota is the first of five states to complete its portion of the basin-wide project. All data is free and accessible through the NDAWN website.
