Kirsten Baesler, ND State Superintendent
The U.S. Senate is expected to confirm North Dakota Superintendent of Public Instruction Kirsten Baesler as assistant secretary of elementary and secondary education at the Department of Education, according to Michael Achterling from the North Dakota Monitor. Senators voted 51 to 46 Friday to advance her nomination along with more than 100 other Trump administration appointees toward final confirmation.
However, the federal government shutdown would delay Baesler’s ability to start the new post. She says she’s “in a holding pattern” and will resign her superintendent position “once operational logistics permit.” Governor Kelly Armstrong will appoint a replacement until an election in 2026. Baesler has served as state superintendent since 2013 and was recently reelected to her fourth term. She says she’s excited to “do the work for all of our nation’s children.”
