Jamestown has dedicated a new bench in memory of a Jamestown Police Officer killed nearly 60 years ago.

Officer William “Bill” Grosskopf died in February 1966 when his patrol car crashed during a snowstorm while responding to a call.   Grosskopf’s story was detailed during the dedication ceremony.

The dedicated bench sits near the site of the crash — at First Avenue North and Fifth Street — and includes a plaque honoring his service.

Police say the memorial serves as a lasting tribute to the risks first responders face in keeping the community safe.

A feature story on the dedication can be found in the Jamestown Sun.
