Today is Veterans Day, honoring those who serve or have served in the armed forces of the United States.
Veterans Day traces its roots to November 11, 1918 — the moment the armistice ended World War I. It was first observed in 1919 as Armistice Day, became a federal holiday in 1938. Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 to honor all U.S. military veterans.
The annual 27th Veterans Day ceremonies at the All Vets Club in Jamestown begin at 7:30 a.m. Veterans, families, and community members are invited to the gathering and for a pancake breakfast, bake sale, bingo, and more social events.
There are formal observances at 11am in Jamestown at the cemetery, including a moment of silence and tribute to those who served. The Jamestown Drum & Bugle Corps will perform, and a POW-MIA ceremony will follow in the evening, continuing the traditional ceremonies in town.
Ceremonies will be held throughout the area today, including at the American Legions and Veterans Halls in Kulm, Gackle, Streeter, Ashley, Ellendale, Valley City, Fredonia, and elsewhere.
