By Payton Gall Dec 8, 2025 | 3:18 PM

The National Weather Service predicts a strong low-pressure system will bring winter weather to the state Tuesday, with a Winter Weather Advisory in place starting midnight tonight. The NWS forecasts freezing rain Tuesday morning across most of North Dakota, with ice accumulations up to a tenth of an inch. Very strong 40 MPH northwest winds are expected in western, central, and southeastern ND, with gusts up to 65 miles per hour possible. The strongest winds aren’t expected until the afternoon.

NWS of Grand Forks says there will be a small area of 6 of more inches of snow within the heaviest snowfall area, which is forecasted to fall from northeastern ND into central MN between 7 AM Tuesday through Wednesday.

Travel will likely be very slick during Tuesday’s commute, prompting officials to issue advice to travelers:

  • Before Driving:
    ○ Tell your family or friends where you are going, your intended route, and time of arrival.
    ○ Make sure your gas tank is full. Carry a winter survival kit.
    ○ Check road conditions before you depart. Be aware, road conditions may change by the time you reach your destination, or if you plan on travelling at a later time.
  •  While Driving:
    ○ Slow down, don’t use cruise control, & reduce distractions.
    ○ Heed ‘no travel’ advisories & road closures.
    ○ Don’t panic if you become stranded. Call someone to let them know you are stranded. Do not try to walk to safety. Attach a cloth to your car antenna or mirror to indicate you need help. Use the dome light and flashers to make your vehicle more noticeable.
    ○ Be alert for snow plows – give them space.
