President Donald Trump is pressuring major farm-equipment manufacturers, to lower tractor prices as part of his rollout of a $12 billion farmer relief package.
He argues that environmental regulations have made machinery overly expensive and complicated, and says his administration will work with the EPA and USDA to roll back requirements — with diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) rules appearing to be a key target. Trump framed the effort as a way to reduce costs for farmers who have faced rising machinery prices due to supply-chain disruptions, steel and aluminum tariffs, and increasingly high-tech equipment.
John Deere responded that it supports lowering costs for farmers but pushed back on the idea that regulations alone are driving higher prices. The company emphasized that technology — including AI-based tools and digital systems — is what will ultimately help producers save money and boost profitability.
