The State of Wisconsin has confirmed its first known case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in dairy cattle through routine federal milk testing.
The infected farm has been quarantined, with sick animals separated, and state and federal agencies are conducting further testing and investigations to prevent spread.
USDA emphasized that the detection does not alter its eradication strategy and does not pose a risk to consumers. Pasteurization effectively inactivates the virus, and only milk from healthy animals enters the commercial supply, while milk from affected cattle is diverted or destroyed. Federal and state officials stress the importance of enhanced biosecurity and prompt reporting of illness.
