Lawmakers Push to Remove Gray Wolves from Endangered Species List

Lawmakers from Wisconsin and Colorado have reintroduced the Pet and Livestock Protection Act, which would remove gray wolves from the Endangered Species List, reinstating a Trump-era delisting rule. Supporters argue that wolf populations have exceeded recovery goals and that federal protections have led to increased livestock attacks, putting stress on ranchers and rural communities.

The bill would shift wolf management authority from federal agencies and courts to state wildlife officials, a move being framed as grounded in science and responsive to local needs.

The proposal has drawn strong backing from agriculture, hunting, and gun-rights groups, who describe wolf recovery as a conservation success and say judicial challenges have undermined effective management. These supporters contend that state-led control would better balance ecosystem health with the protection of livestock, pets, and rural livelihoods.
