According to reporting by Masaki Ova from the Jamestown Sun, the Stutsman County Commission unanimously approved a policy Tuesday requiring townships to pay balances owed to the county twice per year—on June 30th and December 31st.
The policy addresses more than $500,000 in total township balances for work done by the Stutsman County Road Department. Currently, townships can accumulate up to $50,000 in debt before the Road Department stops providing services.
County Auditor Jessica Alonge says one township will levy 18 mills to cover its balance, while another will levy almost 7 mills for its year-old debt. State law allows counties to levy balances of $10,000 or more that are one year old.
Commission Chairman Levi Taylor says the county may need to develop late fees for townships that don’t pay their balances on time.
