North Dakota is set to receive nearly $200 million in federal funds to overhaul rural health care.
The $199 million grant is the first installment of a five-year federal program. Governor Kelly Armstrong calls it a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to improve medical technology and expand the rural health workforce.
State lawmakers must formally approve the funds during a special session starting January 21st. State health officials expect to begin distributing the money by early spring.
North Dakota’s award is slightly higher than neighbors Minnesota and South Dakota, which received $193 million and $189 million, respectively.
