State health officials are urging residents to take precautions after five North Dakotans died from flu-related complications this season, including two children under the age of ten, according to Jeff Beach of the North Dakota Monitor.
The child fatalities are the first reported in the state since 2016. Cases have been widespread, with more than 5,000 reported as of early January. Doctors are advising parents to watch for signs of labored breathing—such as “belly breathing” or flared nostrils—and symptoms of dehydration like fewer wet diapers, or no tears when crying.
While cases may be dipping, experts warn of a potential second wave and note that only 25% of North Dakotans have been vaccinated this year, compared to above 30% during the 2023-24 season. State hospital data shows flu hospitalizations have been climbing in recent years, while vaccine rates fall. Health officials say it is not too late to get a shot, which covers both major strains of the virus.
