The Jamestown community is mourning the loss of a 16-year-old boy who was killed in a pedestrian accident Wednesday afternoon.

According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the incident occurred around 4:35 p.m. near the Legacy Apartments on “old hospital hill.” Authorities say a semi-truck pulling a side dump trailer was traveling downhill on 5th Avenue and took a right turn onto 4th Street Northeast when it struck the teenager, who was crossing the street. The NDHP reports the road was ice-covered, but the visibility and weather was normal/seasonal. The 36-year-old driver of the semi is a man from Lehr, ND, and he was not injured.

The NDHP will not be releasing a name, but a post in the Community of Jamestown Facebook group identifies the victim as Jamestown High School freshman Jake Stiles.

Jamestown Superintendent Rob Lech released a statement to the school district Thursday, calling the news “heartbreaking” and confirming that counselors are available at local schools to support students and staff. “The collective thoughts and prayers of the Jamestown School District are with the family, friends, and all who are impacted by this loss,” Lech said.

A GoFundMe has been set up in support of the family, along with a Meal Train.
