The North Dakota Supreme Court has officially agreed to hear a controversial legal challenge that could decide whether state lawmakers can legally ask voters to extend term limits.
The high court will hear the case during its term this April, following a notice filed this past Sunday, according to Mary Steurer of the North Dakota Monitor. The lawsuit against the legislature was filed by former Senator Oley Larsen and Grand Forks County Commissioner Terry Bjerke, and it centers on one constitutional conflict: the 2022 voter-approved amendment specifically forbids the legislature from “altering or repealing” those limits, yet lawmakers passed a resolution to do exactly that.
