The intense winter system that battered the region yesterday is losing its grip, leaving behind a cold but much quieter forecast for the weekend.

While the “near blizzard” conditions from Wednesday have subsided, the National Weather Service warns that patchy blowing snow remains a concern today due to lingering breezy conditions. Light snow is possible through tonight across central and eastern North Dakota, though accumulation is expected to be minimal to none.

The 3 to 6 inches of “heart-attack” snow that fell across the James River Valley yesterday has settled, but secondary roads and open country remain slick where winds have caused drifting. Most major routes are open, but patchy blowing snow may still reduce visibility to a few miles in open areas this afternoon. Relief is on the horizon. After a frigid weekend, a warming trend is set to begin Monday, bringing more seasonable February temperatures back to the state.
