Blizzard conditions possible for North Dakota Thursday night

Residents should prepare for a volatile day of weather Thursday, as a powerful system brings a messy mix of snow, rain, and potentially damaging wind gusts to Jamestown. Northeast ND is at the highest risk of accumulating snow of about 2 inches tomorrow, but patchy blowing snow in our neck of the woods may prove to be dangerous.

The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Watch for the area with impacts starting at 1 p.m. tomorrow, warning that gusts could hit 50 miles per hour as a cold front surges through the region. They also report an 80% chance of precipitation for Thursday, but accumulating snow is expected to be less than half an inch. Patchy, blowing snow can cause sudden whiteout conditions on Highway 281 and I-94. Rain is also expected starting midday, with thunder also a possibility. Temperatures will plummet from a high of 44 down to 19 degrees overnight, and any standing water will likely turn to ice by Friday morning, making the commute difficult.

If traveling tomorrow, make sure to drive carefully and pack a winter survival kit.
