A high-impact winter weather system is tearing through the region today, with North Dakota facing a combination of high fire danger in the west and near-blizzard conditions in the north.
The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Warning for much of western and central North Dakota, including the Jamestown area. Jamestown is forecast to see up to 60 mph gusts when the wind hits its peak in our area around 9 p.m. tonight.
A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. MDT for western ND, as extreme winds combine with low humidity (20%). Outdoor burning is strictly prohibited.
Central and north ND is transitioning through light snow in the morning to rain with potential for isolated rumbles of thunder this afternoon. Winds will be sustained at 40 mph, with gusts reaching 70-75 mph in some areas. A second round of light snow this evening in the north and Turtle Mountain area is expected to bring 1 to 3 inches, potentially causing localized whiteouts.
NWS forecasters are already tracking a second system for Saturday night through Sunday morning, mostly affecting western and south-central ND. Forecasters say there is a medium to high chance for at least 4 inches of accumulating snow across these regions by Sunday.
