Support for President Donald Trump’s economic policies has begun to soften in North Dakota as residents start to see the impact in their pocketbooks, as trade conflict and global instability hits home.

A new North Dakota poll of 625 residents, conducted by Mason-Dixon from April 15-19, reveals that while overall approval for the President is the opinion of the majority of respondents, support for economic policies has slipped since he took office, according to Michael Standaert of the North Dakota News Cooperative. More residents are uneasy about the impact of tariffs on their everyday expenses.

Forty-eight percent of North Dakotans approve of the U.S. Supreme Court’s February decision to strike down the President’s move of using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose across-the-board tariffs.

Compared to August 2025, support for use of tariffs has dropped 21%, as 60% approved in August, but this April, only 39% stood firm in their support of tariffs by noting their disapproval of the Supreme Court’s decision, marking a change in overall sentiment.

A geographical split was evident in the data, as approval for Trump’s performance remains highest in Western ND, showing 73% support, while eastern ND, particularly Fargo and Cass County, has dropped to 35% support.

The war in Iran has taken over immigration as the most important issue facing the country for 26% of North Dakotans. The top 3 were rounded out by immigration at 17%, and inflation and affordability at 14%.
