Kelly Michael Steffes of Edgeley, ND is facing an attempted murder charge after an alleged armed confrontation and car chase that occurred in late March. He now is charged with a Class A felony, punishable by 20 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.

Steffes was released from custody at the Stutsman County Correctional Center on Tuesday, according to the Jamestown Sun. His preliminary hearing is set for June 4th.

According to court documents, the incident began at around 3:30 a.m. on March 23 at Steffes Excavation and Trucking LLC in Edgeley. The victim is said to have arrived at the business to drop off his ex-girlfriends belongings when Steffes allegedly fired an AR-style rifle into the air and struck the victim in the head with the barrel of the gun. The victim fled north on Highway 281, and Steffes allegedly followed in pursuit with his headlights turned off. During the chase, Steffes reportedly fired four to nine shots at the victims vehicle, with at least one round shattering the back window. Court documents state that Steffes admitted to firing his gun and striking the man with the barrel. He also admitted to chasing the man out of town, but denied firing shots.

However, a search of his residence and shop revealed spent rifle casings consistent with the scene on Highway 281. Authorities also reportedly seized cocaine, mushroom gummies, dextroamphetamine, and marijuana.

Steffes now faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, multiple counts of reckless endangerment, and multiple counts of drug possession.
