A mental health crisis in Northeast Jamestown shut down a two-block radius on Thomas Avenue for a short period of time Thursday morning. Jamestown Police was dispatched after a family member called in, reporting that an individual was threatening to harm themself and had knives in the home.
At around 8:30 a.m., officers arrived at the residence, finding the individual in the front yard. Major Justin Blinsky said officers attempted to talk to the person, but they refused to drop the knives and retreated inside.
It was decided that a specialized response was needed, so negotiators from the James Valley Special Operations Team were called to help in communication with the individual. The negotiations were successful, and the individual voluntarily exited the home unarmed and surrendered to officers. The individual was treated for injuries and was transported to Jamestown Regional Medical Center to be assessed and cared for.
If you or a loved one is experiencing a crisis, support is available 24/7. Call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
