The North Dakota Monitor recently covered a new report from the National Education Association that reveals North Dakota has fallen to 41st in the nation for average teacher salaries. The average ND salary last year was $60,704. Nick Archuleta, president of ND United, says it wasn’t long ago that North Dakota ranked between no. 20 and no. 30.
The legislature approved a 2.5% annual salary increase, but Archuleta says that already wasn’t keeping up with inflation. Although the average North Dakota teacher’s salary has increased by 3.6% since 2023-24, educators say it hasn’t kept pace with inflation, and investments made by other states continue to push North Dakota down the list. Concerns about teachers leaving the profession have risen, according to Archuleta.
Despite North Dakota being nearly $14,000 short of the national average, Governor Armstrong has proposed holding K-12 funding steady for the 2027-2029 biennium.
